Master/Ph.D. Programs, Sustainability Leadership

The Sustainability Leadership Master/Ph.D. Programs are designed to foster interdisciplinary leaders adept at integrating knowledge from diverse fields, including law and politics, economics and management, environmental science and technology, and public ethics. Students will explore global sustainable development issues and address the significant challenges in international public affairs.

With a growing global emphasis on human sustainability issues, the United Nations and other international organizations have initiated numerous projects requiring active corporate engagement. As part of the international community, corporate leaders are anticipated to proactively or reactively collaborate with these global initiatives. Giving the evolving nature of these developing core competencies in corporate leaders is vital. These include a dedication to human sustainability, a thorough understanding of humanities and environmental issues, and a commitment to lifelong learning. These competencies are the pillars upon which this program is built.

The curriculum is structured to provide a comprehensive understanding of sustainable leadership through a blend of required, core, and elective courses:

Required Courses: focus on foundational knowledge and essential qualities for sustainable leadership, including courses on leadership development and the economic implications of sustainability challenges.

Core Courses: offer a solid foundation in environmental governance and related fields, enhancing students' understanding of relevant technologies and methodologies

Elective Courses: structured around the themes of political economics, environment, and public, as well as corporate governance, to deepen understanding of the critical success factors and risks in sustainable operations by businesses and governments. This includes:

  • Environment (E): covers topics such as energy policy, sustainable economics, and governance, including renewable energy, sustainable development, and environmental protection, with contributions from the School of Earth Sciences and experts from external institutions.
  • Society (S): focuses on corporate social responsibility (CSR), social enterprise practices, and impact and ESG investing. It provides an analysis of Social Return on Investment (SROI) and methods for measuring and managing social value.
  • Governance (G): introduces corporate governance theory and practices, sustainable supply chains, carbon footprint calculation, and carbon tax management to incorporate sustainability concepts into company operations and assess the impacts of sustainable development.

Additionally, the curriculum includes courses taught by international experts in sustainable leadership who share the latest knowledge. Students will also have the opportunity to engage in forums and lecture series, bringing together leading scholars to discuss pressing issues in sustainability and technology.

Through this multifaceted approach, the Sustainability Leadership Master/Ph.D. Programs aim to cultivate leaders knowledgeable in sustainable management, economics, policy, and technological development and embody the principles of sustainable development in their professional practices.
